In this workshop- based on Yara’s practice writing political novels that incorporate her mothers’ experiences fighting Brazil’s military dictatorship- we'll swap stories of political struggle from across generations and write them up as short stories, poems or monologues. Together, we’ll create a small archive of socialist resistance across places and times, and learn about each others’ experiences. Come to this workshop with your mum, daughter, father, auntie or friend - or come alone and we’ll pair you with someone of a different generation.
We’ll end with a small sharing for all who’d like to.
Yara Rodrigues Fowler grew up in South London. Her first novel, Stubborn Archivist, was longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize 2020 and the Desmond Elliot Prize 2019. Yara was named one of The Observer’s ‘hottest-tipped’ debut novelists of 2019 and was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2019. Yara’s second novel, there are more things, was published in April 2022 and recently nominated for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2022.
