QE2 surveys troops

The British Monarchy has been fundamental in remaking the world. Through centuries of colonisation, exploitation and violence, the royal family have been one of capital's most efficient agents. The death of a monarch and the proclamation of another has been met with both a frightening outpouring of nationalism and state-backed squashing of even the most benign dissent. What is the current role of the monarchy, abroad and in the UK, and what does the future hold for one of history's most brutal families?
